Roller, Sr., a well known member of a prominent Rockingham family, died at his home several miles north of Harrisonburg at an early hour last Monday morning, in the 72d year of his age. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (nee Whitmore) Roller, of the Mt. Crawford neighborhood, and was born September 15, 1823. On the 21st of December, 1843, he married Frances Sidney Allebaugh, a daughter of Maj. John Allebaugh, at the old Stone Fort near Dayton, and last December this couple were permitted to celebrate their "golden anniversary" with a family circle of eight children and numerous grandchildren whose number had at that time been unbroken by a single death. Soon after his marriage the deceased began merchandizing at Mt. Crawford in the old brick store building that is yet standing, but is now used as a residence. In 1850 he was compelled by ill health to abandon this business and bought the farm two miles south of Mt. Crawford, now owned by Ephraim Bowman. Here he built a beautiful residence and lived in comfort, adding to his property in land and slaves util the war came. The Federal troops at the time of their retreat down the Valley in 1864 were ordered to burn and destroy all crops and to carry away all live stock as they went. This was done as far north as the line of North River. In the smoke of that destruction the deceased lost barn, stables, outbuildings and the most valuable crops he ever raised and with the soldiers most of his laves went too. Though disabled for service in the field, Mr. Roller was an earnest friend of the South and entertained the Southern soldiers with unstinting hospitality. On one occasion all of Capt. Brock's Valley Rangers were entertained at his home and at another time the V. M. I. cadets on their way to the battle of New Market. The result of the war left the deceased—as it left many others of the same class of men—heavily in debt. The old home and adjoining lands were sold and even the wife's dower was surrendered to effect a settlement of his debts in full. In 1873 he moved to his late home, "Inglewood," near Harrisonburg, where he busied himself with the affairs of the farm, leading and active out-door life. He had been in delicate health for years prior to this time and his work and exercise in the open air contributed to prolong his life to a ripe old age. For fifty-two years Mr. Roller was a faithful member of the Reformed church, which had been the faith of his forefathers. For many years he was superintendent of the Sunday-school held in the basement of the old church in Mt. Crawford. He served also for a number of years first as deacon and then as elder in the church, and represented his congregation in the meetings of the Classes and Synods of the church. In the latter he served with his friend, Rev. Dr. Callender, when the famous "Peace Commission" was proposed, which settled the controversy in the church in regard to its liturgy and gave it such an impetus that it doubled its membership and influence in a score of years. In early life he was somewhat prominent in public affairs, both in his own neighborhood and in the county. He was for a long time a member of the old county court and also of the county Board of Supervisors. He was also charged with the settlement of numerous estates and was faithful in every trust. He was the head of a family of five sons and three daughters, all of whom reside in Harrisburg, except Rev. Robt. Douglas Roller, D. D., of Charleston, West Va., and Peter S. Roller, Jr., of Shenandoah county. The funeral took place from his late home on Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended. Rev. Dr. S. N. Callender, secretary of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Reformed church, a former pastor and lifelong friend of the deceased, conducted the services at the house and at the grave, and delivered a touching eulogy. Rev. C. B. Heller, of Mt. Crawford, assisted in the service. Revs. J. P. Harner and J. S. Garrison, of the Reformed church; Rev. Dr. Palmer, of the Presbyterian church; and Rev. S. M. Yerger, of the Episcopal church, were also present. The interment was at Woodbine Cemetery. The pall-bearers were: Judge Geo. G. Grattan, Winfield Liggett, W. H. de Bruin, Herbert Coffman, L. H.
