Vonk was born April 16, 1933, near Sioux Center, one of 11 children born to Ben and Jennie (Katze) Vonk. He was raised on the family farm near Sioux Center and attended country school at Center 4. He went on to graduate from Sioux Center High School with the Class of 1951. He married his high school sweetheart, Donna De Leeuw at nearby Middleburg on December 16, 1952. He served two years in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. He was stationed stateside in California and Ft. Lewis, Washington. After receiving his honorable discharge he returned to Sioux Center where the couple began their own farming operation west of town. He loved farm life and was devoted to his family. In 1991, he retired and they moved to their home in Sioux Center but his work ethic brought him out to the farm every day to assist his sons. He was an active member of First Reformed Church, serving as a deacon, and also served three terms on the board of directors of Memorial Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Donna Vonk of Sioux Center; son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Sandi Vonk of Sioux Center; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Rick Dolieslager of Sioux Center; and Dan Vonk of Sioux Center and his fiancee, Julie Smedra; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Chris Vonk and Eugene and Judi Vonk, all of Sioux Center; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and John Feekes of Apache Junction, Arizona, Gertrude and Elmer Van De Berg of Sioux Center, Kathy and Harold Vande Kieft of Orange City and Dorothy and Andy Van Bochove of Sun City, Arizona; his sister, Goldie De Jager of Sioux Cetwo sisters-in-law, Wynn Vonk of Sioux Center and Gertrude Vonk of Mountain Lake, Minnesota; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Bud Brooke; a grandson; two brothers, Henry and Ben Vonk; brother and sister-in-law, Gerrit and Jennie Vonk; brother-in-law, Duane De Jager; and sister-in-law, Henrietta Vonk, The Vonk Family prefers memorials to the Juvenile Diabetes Assoc., American Lung Assoc. or the American Heart Assoc.
