Today his body arrives in Gastonia. Entering the service in May, Private First Class Vernon had seen seven weeks of battle when he was killed in action December 4th. He was 20 years old. Born November 23rd, 1948, he was a Son of Mr and Mrs Broadus Vernon of Alexis, Route 1. He was previously employed by Duke Power Company. Surviving in addition to his parents, are three brothers, Gene, Terry and Timothy Vernon of the home; and two sisters, Mrs Bill Nicholson of Boger City and Miss Cynthia Vernon of the home. The Reverend Billy Miller will officiate at the 4pm services Thursday at Mt Zion Baptist Church, Alexis. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where full military honors will be conducted. The body was to be taken to the home today at 2pm. Ward Funeral home, Gastonia, made the arrangements. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Broadus Vernon, Route #1, Alexis, NC, buried in the same cemetery. Brother to Gene, Terry and Timothy. He served with Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division(AMBL), USARV. He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
