Memorial services were 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Pinky Person officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253. Carl was born April 29, 1924, in Rock Township, Cherokee County, Iowa, to Peter and Emma (Ament) Reinert. He attended school in Maryhill, Rock Township rural school and high school in Quimby, Iowa. He served as a lead scout and forward observer for the U.S. Army's Second Division during World War II. He received two Purple Heart Medals as he was wounded during the Normandy Invasion and again near the Rhine River. He fought through Normandy, Northern France, Belgium and into Germany. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his military service, he returned to Cherokee County, Iowa, where he farmed southwest of Cherokee for 41 years. On Jan. 5, 1948, he married Frances Kirchoff at Holy Name Church in Marcus, Iowa. He was a member of the Veteran's Battle of the Bulge, the Disabled American Veterans and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Charles and Betsy Reinert of Tyler, Texas; a daughter and her husband, Margaret and Digger Duin of Primghar, Iowa; sisters, Verna Sticha of Phoenix, Ariz., and Helen Elliott of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother and his wife, Floyd and Evelyn Reinert of Cherokee, Iowa, and Alamo, Texas; seven stepgrandchildren; and 10 great-stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters.
