Edmund Fred Tuenge, son of William A. and Mathilda (Bethke) Tuenge, was born August 25, 1919 in New Ulm, MN. He was the third child of five born to this family. Edmund was baptized in the Lutheran Faith at St. Pauls Church in New Ulm. When he was still an infant his family moved to Perth, ND to live near his Tuenge grandparents. Edmund lovingly achieved the family nickname of Boots as a youngster after repeatedly being found under the table playing with the hired mens boots. His nieces and nephews all grew up knowing him as Uncle Boots. He attended school at Perth and was confirmed with his two older brothers at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1934. As a young person he enjoyed sports, hunting, and fishing. He also loved pulling pranks like toppling outhouses and tipping cows with his brothers and school friends. In 1941 he moved with his family to Sioux Falls, SD. He was employed at Western Union as a messenger, along with his brother Edwin. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in the summer of 1942. He left for Macon, GA on July 5th. He served under General Bradley in the European Theatre during WWII. He was attached to the Third battalion, Company M of the 47th Infantry of the 9th Division. He participated in campaigns in Africa, Sicily, England, Normandy/France, Belgium and Germany. The 47th experienced much time in heavy combat and Edmund was one of only a few men from his original unit to return at the wars conclusion. He lost many friends during the War. Edmund received several recognitions and medals for his service, including The Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945 and returned to Sioux Falls. He worked for John Morrell and Co., with most of his career in the canned ham department. He retired after 35 years with the company. Edmund was a faithful Ford man, usually trading in his LTD or Crown Victoria every couple of years for a newer model. His preference was red if he could get it. He loved the outdoors and when not hunting or fishing or doing his own gardening, he would be helping family members with yard work, also keeping a regular schedule for his lawn mowing days. He was a favorite uncle that took the time to play catch or games of ball, lawn darts, ping pong, board games and many, many games of cards over the many years. He enjoyed growing lovely roses, peonies, petunias and other flowers each season. His apple trees were also his pride and joy. He was sure to watch the Twins games as a devoted fan, unless the game ran past 9:30 in the evening! Edmund loved animals all of his life. His greyhound Pup was a favorite hunting companion of his. He and Cody hunted many pigeons together over more than10 years, and many other family pets like Maggie, Lucy & Shelby also considered him a favorite uncle as he was always sure to bring them special treats when he visited. They could usually see & hear his vehicle approaching from quite a great distance and would be anxiously awaiting him. Senator John Thune honored Edmund, as well as several other Normandy veterans on behalf of the French government for their service during WWII with a special medal and recognition ceremony in 1999. He went to Pierre with his niece to attend the dedication of the WWII memorial in September 2001, shortly after the 9-11 events. In April of 2010, at the age of 90, Edmund was able to travel with his niece Corey to Washington, D.C. on the Honor Flight to see the National WWII memorial and other sights. He took great pride in sharing the story and photos of that special experience of a lifetime. He was a lifetime fan of chewing gum, cough drops, peanut M&Ms, buttered beets and root beer or orange soda. In the summer of 2010, Edmund moved to Bethany Meadows Senior Living in Brandon. Edmund was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ernest, Elmer and Edwin, and one sister Evelyn (Vollan Brobjorg). He is survived by his niece Corey Thompson and her husband, Steve, of Brandon, and nephew Jimmie Vollan and his wife, Tanya, of Baltic, as well as nieces, Anita Olson, Vickie Sams, Susan Corbin, Debbie Compestine, Shavonne Felix, Linda Ellisonand Dawn Scott, and nephews Darwin Tuenge, Alan Tuenge, Gary Tuenge, and all of their families, several aunts, many cousins, and other extended family members and friends. Memorials may be directed to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Bethany Meadows, Good Samaritan Sioux Falls Center, or the charity of choice.
