Description	:	Ervin E. Mehlhaff was born on February 23, 1921, at Hosmer, South Dakota, to Henry and Mary Mehlhaff. He grew up at Hosmer and farmed with his father prior to entering the service. On October 26, 1942, Ervin Mehlhaff entered active service at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon; Camp White, Oregon; Fort Lewis, Washington; Camp Beale, California; and San Louis Obispo, California. Pfc. Mehlhaff was born on February 23, 1921, at Hosmer, South Dakota, to Henry and Mary Mehlhaff. He grew up at Hosmer and farmed with his father prior to entering the service. On October 26, 1942, Ervin Mehlhaff entered active service at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was stationed at Camp Adair, Oregon; Camp White, Oregon; Fort Lewis, Washington; Camp Beale, California; and San Louis Obispo, California. Pfc. Mehlhaff was sent overseas to the Pacific theater on July 27, 1944, as part of Company L, 383 Infantry, 96th Division. Private First Class Ervin Mehlhaff was killed in action in the Pacific when he was hit by enemy sniper fire. In a letter dated December 18, 1944, the War Department wrote these words to Mary Mehlhaff, Ervin's mother: It is with regret that I am writing to confirm the recent telegram informing you of the death of your son, Private First Class Ervin E. Mehlhaff, 37,315,638, Infantry, who was killed in action on 31 October 1944 on Leyte Island, Philippine Islands. Ervin Mehlhaff's remains were returned the United States after the war and reburied in Hosmer, SD. This entry was respectfully submitted by Sheila Hansen and Lois Groft.
