Page 30 Contributor: MJS (49260156) GEORGE EDWARD TRUAX George Edward Truax, only child of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Truax. Was born September 21st, 1895, at Yorkshire, Iowa, and died at Neufchateau, France, Dec. 23rd, 1917, aged 22 years, 3 months and 2 days. In 1901, George came with his parents to Keosauqua, Iowa, where he entered the public schools of that city and there completed the entire curriculum. _______________????_____________ of the Methodist Episcopal Sunday school at Keosauqua. It was while he was pursuing his studies in high school, during the pastorate of Rev. W. G. Thorn, that he gave his heart to Christ and joined the Methodist church in Keosauqua, Sept. 17, 1909 and transferred his membership to Asbury church, Des Moines, October 31, 1915. George was the first Des Moines boy to give his life in the "World War." The memorial services held were most beautiful. A quartette from Camp dodge finished part of the music. Among other notables present were General Ge____, Senator Lafe Young and Chaplain B____. And with the other exquisite floral offerings was a beautiful heart shaped design from the friends at Keosauqua. A particularly impressive part of the service was the presentation of a large American flag, made in Polk county, to the parents of the deceased soldier. Senator Lafe Young, one of the State council of National Defense, presented the flag with appropriate remarks, urging Mr. and Mrs. Truax to accept the flag which their son had died as a tribute from the friends of the boy and to hang it in the room occupied by their son during his life at home. Two of the literary gems that have been brought together by these obsequies follow: "To know thee is to love thee and no one spoke Thy name but in praise" ---Senator Young "Tis hard to take the burden up, When these have laid it down, They sweetened all the joys of life, They soften every frown." ----M. E. Sunday School Keosauqua Memorial services were held in the Asbury M.E. church, Des Moines, Jan'y 1918. Funeral services were held in Keosauqua, Io.[sic], on Sunday, June 26th, 1921. The American Legion of Keosauqua had charge and the boys did their part with much credit. Rev. C. A. Field, a former pastor of the departed soldier and now pastor of the Methodiat church of Marengo, Iowa, delivered the sermon, and Rev, Caughlin and Rev, Hedges assisted in the service. A quartette consisting of Mesdames Manning, McCrary, Price and Craig, sang several numbers. The floral offerings were beautiful and consisted of many elaborate designs. The military band from Fairfield rendered several appropriate numbers, and airplane from the Curtiss Company's field at Fairfield, took part in the services by dropping flowers upon the grave at the close of the services. Burial was made in the Purdom cemetery. To the sadness of the occasion must be added the inclemency of the weather. --------------- We wish to thank the Legion and the Auxiliary and the choir and all friends for their kindness and sympathy and for the beautiful floral offerings during our time of sorrow.
