SMITH KILLED IN NORMANDY INVASION The fourth gold star was added to Highland County’s Honor Roll Saturday, July 29, 1944 Private Harding Coolidge Smith was killed June 22, while fighting with the United States Infantry in Normandy, France, according to a notification from the War Department. Private Smith, was a son of Mrs. Etta Smith and the late Mr Howard Smith of Monterey and was twenty four years old. He attended school at Monterey High School and lived with his uncle, Calvin Smith, until called into service in June 1942. He received his training at Camp Pickett, Va., Camp Blanding, Fla., and at other camps in Tennessee, California and Kansas. Sometime in April he sailed for oversea duty and was in England for several months, his mother hearing from him regularly during this time. After Invasion Day she also had several letters from him. Pvt Smith is survived by his mother, two brothers, James and Fred Smith of Washington, D.C. and five sisters, Mrs Elva Rexrode, Mrs. Eugene Whitelaw and Mrs. Russell Varner of Monterey, Mrs Wallace Neil, Spring City, Pa. and Mrs. Lee Hevener of Burnsville, Va. Highland Recorder October 8, 1948 BODY OF PFC. HARDING SMITH RETURNED TO STATES Mrs Etta Smith of Franklin Rd., received a telegram from the Army Philadelphia center Friday Oct 1, informing her of the arrival in the States of the body of her son, PFC. Harding Coolidge Smith. Any further word from the government and arrangements will be announced promptly. PFC. Smith entered the Service in 1942, received training at several camps, and was overseas only a short time. He was killed in action June 22, 1944 at Cherbourg, France. Harding was born December 25, 1920, while his parents Mrs Smith and the late Howard Smith, lived at Burnsville, Surviving are his mother and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs Elva Rexrode at home; James C. Smith, Washington; Mrs Wallace Neil, Spring City, Pa.; Fred Smith, Washington; Mrs. Eugene Whitelaw, Monterey; Mrs. Lee Hevener, of Burnsville; and Mrs. Russell Varner, Monterey. One brother Roscoe and one sister, Ola preceded him in death.
