Herbert William Callan, Jr. was born in Wheeler, Texas on Dec. 26, 1924 to Herbert and Maggie Callan. He had one younger brother, Robert. He spent his early years in Shamrock, Texas where he enjoyed playing football and boxing. Following high school he attended Abilene Christian College on a football scholarship. During his sophomore year he came home for the 1942 Christmas break and because of World War II, made the decision to enlist with a majority of his buddies in the U.S. Army, serving in the 78th Division- Reconnaissance Cavalry Troop. During the European campaign and specifically, the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Battle Stars. While in the army, Herb was on the boxing team and was the Light Heavy Weight Champion for the 78th Division. Following his military service, Herb returned home and attended Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas where he graduated with a BA in Education. While at MU, he earned letters in football and participated in AAU boxing. His first teaching positions were at Shamrock High School and Lefors High School in Texas. Herb coached football and boxing, served as athletic director and started a girls' basketball program. He was awarded a Master of Arts in School Administration from West Texas State University, in Canyon, Texas in 1956. In 1959, he began teaching at Muleshoe High School in Texas where he again coached football plus track and field. He became the school's principal after one year. During this time Herb married Colleene Payne, also from Shamrock, and they had three sons, Gene, Kim and Galen. Following a three year venture into private business in Colorado and California, Herb took an administrative assistant-counselor position at Goldendale High School. As the head track and field coach he developed the first girls' track team in Goldendale. Herb led a group of track and field volunteer supporters in transforming Goldendale's existing track into a state-of-the-art facility. The volunteer group went on to host the first Girls' State Track Meet which was held in Goldendale four consecutive years. In 2005, Herb was inducted into the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame. Herb served as Goldendale's District Superintendent until his retirement. Herb married Sandy McKee from Goldendale. They enjoyed their retirement together traveling with friends, visiting family and gardening. Sandy passed away in 2009. Herb was active in the Goldendale Church of Christ where he developed warm and caring friendships within the congregation. In addition, he enjoyed working on home projects with his neighbors and friends who were always willing to help by providing assistance later in his life. Herb was a member of the Goldendale Country Club where he served a term as club president and enjoyed playing golf with his friends. He had a close relationship with his children and stepchildren and didn't mind driving hours to watch his grandchildren's sporting events. Herb's intense work ethic and dependable nature defined his character as a man you could always count on. Herb is survived by his three children and three stepchildren; Gene Callan (Peggy) of Portland, Kim Callan (Shaun) of Walla Walla, Galen Callan (Kimberly) of Portland, Kathy McKee Fiser (Ken) of Boerne, Texas, Kirby McKee (Cheryl) of Sagle, Idaho, Kelly McKee Patterson of Spokane, and 12 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20 at Columbia Hills Memorial Chapel in Goldendale. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made to the Herb and Sandy Callan Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Goldendale School District.
