Friends may call after 8 a.m. Thursday at Siegert-Didesch Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave. Mr. Hoffmann worked for Montgomery Ward, retiring in 1986, after 43 years of service. He was born on March 30, 1914, in La Motte, son of John M. and Mary (Lucke) Hoffmann. He was a veteran of World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries on Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion. He attended grade school and high school at Holy Rosary School. He was a member of the 8th Infantry. He was an enthusiastic sports fan and followed the Hawkeyes and Cubs with great interest. Surviving are a brother, Dr. Eugene (Rita) Hoffmann, of Dubuque; and six nieces and nephews, Dr. Paul Hoffmann, of Dubuque, Tom Hoffmann, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mark Hoffmann, of Chesterfield, Va., Mike Hoffmann, of East Dubuque, Ill., Mary Holtze, of Des Moines, and Ann Hoffmann Gaughan, of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, J. Allen Hoffmann. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
