Read More	PFC US MARINE CORPS WORLD WAR II ================================== Below courtesy of Tommy Sanders (#49005162) ================================== Joseph Daniel “Joe Dan” Elliott, Jr., 82, resident of 124 Woodhaven Court, husband of Barbara Hunt Elliott, died June 19, 2009 at Hospice House. Born February 24, 1927 in Greenwood, he was a son of the late Joseph Daniel and Desdemona King Elliott. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and attended Lander College. He was a World War II combat US Marine Veteran having served on Guam and Iwo Jima with the Third Marine Division. Joe Dan was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with Battle Star, a Combat Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation and a World War II Victory Medal. Joe Dan was a charter and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8131 having held the position as State Commander of the VFW in 1992. He was a lifetime member of the Third Marine Division Association and the Marine Corps League, Lakelands Marines and was selected as 2004 Marine of the year. Mr. Elliott was inducted into the Legion of Chapel of Four Chaplains in 2005. Being a very community minded person, Joe Dan served on the Greenwood County Centennial Commission in 1997, providing a roster of Greenwood residents who had served and died for our country from 1897 to 1997 which was placed in a time capsule. Mr. Elliott was a former shop supervisor with Aldrich Machine Works and later retired from Chick Medical Products as a programmer for CNC metal works. He was a member of Laurel Baptist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife of 59 years are a daughter, Jeanne E. and husband, John D. Harrison of Greenwood; a son, Joseph Daniel “Danny”, III, and wife, Debbie Brown Elliott of Lexington; three grandchildren and a step grandson, Elizabeth Harrison Ferguson and husband, Bo Ferguson, Ashley Harrison Sitton and husband, Joe Sitton, John Harrison, III and wife, Megan Harrison and Shane Tumlin and wife, Lori Tumlin; great-grandchildren, Coleman and Blakely Ferguson, Emily Sitton and Mat Tumlin; two sisters, Doris and husband, Archie Rush and Florence Matthews, both of Greenwood; a sister-in-law, Margie Elliott of Greenwood and 10 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Mac Elliott. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday from the Blyth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robbie Stollger and Rev. John Turner officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Harrison, Shane Tumlin, Bo Ferguson, Joe Sitton, Phil Lucas, Ken Shields, Ray Kittles and Michael Reh. Honorary escort will be members of the Marine Corps League, Detachment 1112, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8131 and American Legion Post 20, along with, Maggie McAlister, Judy Rush, Ted Long, Kim Dewey, Diane Anderson, Jerry Kent and Susan Kelly. The family is at the home of his daughter, Jeanne and John Harrison, 111 St. Andrews Lane in Lodge Grounds and will receive friends from 10 to 11 Monday morning before the service and again at the grave immediately following the committal service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Laurel Baptist Church Building Fund, 330 Sample Road, Greenwood, SC 29649, or to HospiceCare of the Piedmont, 408 West Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646.
