Read More	Roanoke Times, The (VA) - Wednesday, October 2, 1996 Deceased Name: CALDWELL CALDWELL, Lawrence Clayton, Sr., 78, of New Castle, passed away Monday, September 30, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was a life-long resident of Craig County. He owned and operated Lawrence's Bestway Grocery Store in New Castle for 35 years and at one time served as Treasurer of Craig County. Mr. Caldwell served on the Board of Directors for the Farmers & Merchants Bank, and was a member of the Masonic Mountain Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4491. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Craig County Fair Association. Mr. Caldwell also served on the Board of Directors for New Castle Building Corporation. During World War II he served with the 76th Infantry Division in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge, being awarded the Bronze Star for heroism. He was a member and served as a deacon of the New Castle Christian Church. He is survived by his loving wife, Lila Lipes Caldwell of New Castle; a son, L. Clayton Caldwell Jr. and his wife, Glenna, of Roanoke; two granddaughters, Lisa C. Beaudoin and husband, Michael, Tracey C. Dillon and husband, Sam, all of New Castle; one stepgreat-grandson, Michael C. Beaudoin; one sister, Pauline Leffel of Roanoke; one sister-in-law, Emogene Stafford of Rich Creek; one nephew, John B. Leffel, Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, October 3, 1996, at the New Castle Christian Church with Dr. Ernie Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Huffman Memorial Park. Military rites will be held at the graveside. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle. Masonic rites will be held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home by Mountain Lodge #140 A.F. & A.M. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Craig County Rescue Squad or the New Castle Christian Church Building Fund.
