Paul was drafted into the Army 20 September 1967 and arrived in Vietnam 10 March 1968, where he was assigned to A Company, 2nd Battalion,14th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, USARV. A Company was on patrol when they engaged hostile forces and Paul died as a result of shrapnel wounds to the body from hostile mortar fire, during Operation Toan Thang I.
