Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Faith Evangelical Church, Underwood, with the Rev. D. Wayne Bearbower officiating. Interment will be in Underwood Cemetery. Robert Louis Johannes was born May 27, 1935, at Underwood, the son to Henry and Lorina (Grosz) Johannes. He lived on the family farm eight miles west of Underwood, where he attended rural school. He graduated from Underwood High School in 1953. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army July 11, 1957, and completed basic combat training in Fort Carson, Colo. He later spent time at Fort Knox, Ky., and at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, where he studied automotive repair and maintenance. His final military assignment took him to Virginia, where he boarded a ship that encountered difficulty sailing through a storm en route to the Baffin Islands. The storm destroyed the ship at sea and Bob and his shipmates were rescued minutes before the ship sank. He was honorably discharged from active duty July 10, 1959, and remained in the Army Reserve until July 1963. Bob married Karen Koenig August 30, 1962, at the First Baptist Church in Underwood. He farmed west of Underwood and raised registered Polled Hereford until 1977. In 1978, Bob had a complete dispersion of the herd and finished farming and ranching operations. He worked for the City of Underwood until 1980, when he became employed as maintenance director of the Prairieview Nursing Home in Underwood. In 1989, he underwent cancer surgery and suffered two strokes that caused him to retire. Bob taught Sunday School for many years and assisted with the Junior Youth Group at the First Baptist Church in Underwood. Bob is remembered for being an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed teaching his sons about the outdoors and took pride in listening to his daughters' musical talents. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Karen Johannes, Underwood; daughter, Cindy (Paul) Klingbeil, Minot, and their children, Jocelyn (fiance, Jordan Rodgers), Benjamin, and Elizabeth; son, Ron (Sheila) Johannes, Willmar, Minn., and their children, Mitchell, Mikayla and Joshua; daughter, Chandra (Jon) Longnecker, Waconia, Minn., and their children, Caleb and Jacob; son, Sid (Lynae) Johannes, Vergas, Minn., and their children, Abe and Shauntel; five brothers, Harold (Thelma) Johannes, Underwood, Howard (Opal) Johannes, Riverdale, Weston (Rowena) Johannes, Underwood, Arlo (Sandi) Johannes, Snohomish, Wash., and Jim (Ella) Johannes, Underwood; and two sisters, Marjorie (Carl) Jessen, St. Paul, Minn., and Laurel (Jim) Skully, Olmsted Falls, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Lorina Johannes. Memorials are preferred to the Gideons International, 50 Century Blvd., P.O.
