"Robert Ridgeway was born at Scottsville, Nebraska May 9, 195 and was killed in action January 13, 1945 on Leyte Island of the Philippine group at the age of 29 years, 8 months, and 4 days. "Robert was reared and spent most of his life in Holt County [Nebraska], with the exception of about two years of which he spent in the states of Montana and Wyoming prior to entering the U.S. Army. Robert was inducted into the Army at Ft. Crook, Nebr, October 6, 1941. He was then transferred to Camp Roberts, Calif. for basic infantry training. He was also stationed at various other posts in California, which included San Luis Obispo, Pericedo, Indio, and Fort Ord. "He departed from Ft. Ord, Calif. in April, 1943 with the 17th Infantry, which then invaded the island of Attu. While serving in the Aleutian Islands his legs were severely frozen and he was sent to a hospital in Alaska. After sic months he recovered and was the reassigned to the 32nd Infantry stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. "After a short time there he went with the 32nd Infantry in the invasion of the Marshall Islands and fought on Kwajalein Atoll. After clearing the island of enemy resistance he again returned to the Hawaiian Islands, where he was stationed, to make preparations for the invasion of the Philippines. Later in the invasion of the Philippines he landed on the island of Leyte. "The last word received from Robert was while he was on Leyte and no further word was had of him until the War Department notified his parents that he had been killed in action on the island January 13. "He leaves to mourn his passing: his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ross Ridgeway; two sisters, Mrs. D.J. Sullivan of Grand Island, Nebr., and Miss Margaret Ridgeway of Davenport, Iowa; and four brothers, Pvt. George Wilford Ridgeway in France, Vincent J. Ridgeway of North Platte, Nebr., Charles W. Ridgeway, SF 2/c in the South Pacific, and Donald H. Ridgeway at home."
