He was born in the Leakesville area of Luray on Nov. 18, 1923, at the then family-owned Issac Spitler House, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Tommy was the first born son of Martha Shaffer Shirley and Thomas R. Shirley Sr. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris Miller Shirley; and two younger brothers, Robert and David Shirley. He is survived by his son, T.R. Shirley III; daughter-in-law, Cathy; and two granddaughters, Connor and Corin Shirley. Tommy grew up working his father’s farm. He graduated from Luray High School in 1943. He played football and baseball for Luray and drove a school bus. He was elected the Virginia State FFA president and attended the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis in that capacity. His legacy remains a part of the National FFA. At age 92, Tommy spoke at the Virginia State FFA convention held at Virginia Tech as the oldest surviving State FFA president. He received a standing ovation for his inspirational message to approximately 2000 attendees. Upon graduation from Luray High, Tommy was drafted and served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Infantry Division, (Big Red 1), near the end of World War II. His division was deployed in Nuremberg, Germany, that provided critical security during the Nuremberg Trials. He was a current member of the Luray VFW Post 621. He returned to Luray after his military deployment and married Doris Miller Shirley on Dec. 7, 1945. Following his marriage to Doris, he worked as parts manager at International Harvester Farm Equipment, then at Shenandoah National Park as a park ranger, and finally as senior branch manager with Jefferson Bank, where he retired after 30 years of service. Tommy loved baseball and pitched in the old Valley Massanutten League. He assisted in the founding of the Luray Little League and was so honored at a recent 50-year celebration. Church, faith and community were a very important part of his life. He was an active member of St. Marks Lutheran, where he took on various responsibilities including the church council.
