May, 59, of Wood River died Wednesday night in a Grand Island hospital to which he had been admitted the day before. Survivors include his wife, Fern. Grand Island Daily Independent Friday 2 Jan 1959 Vere May Rites Set Saturday Wood River-Funeral services for Vere R. May, 59, well-known Wood River resident who died unexpectedly Wednesday night in a Grand Island hospital, will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., in the Presbyterian Church in Wood River. The Rev. Robert Sheagley will officiate. Mr. May had been in the hospital two days for a general check-up. Born June 10, 1899, in Fairfield to Milo and Minnie May, he moved with his family to the Sutton and Hastings communities when he was still a small boy. He was educated in Grand Island schools and was graduated from the Grand Island Baptist College. After graduation, he served in World War I, then returned to Grand Island and went to work at the Union Pacific Depot. Mr. May later transferred to the same post in Wood River, then farmed until 1949 when he retired and moved into town. HE was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Wood River, an elder of the Presbyterian Church, an Odd Fellow and a member of the Wood River American Legion Post. Mr. May married Fern Kunz in Wood River July 2, 1949. He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Mrs. Wendell Johnson of Clay Center and Mrs. Ethel Erbacher of Anchorage, Alaska; and one brother, Earl of Sterling, Colo. His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded Mr. May in death. Friends may call at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River between 7 and 9 Friday evening.
