Gietzen was born Oct. 25, 1927, in Glen Ullin, the son of William N. and Anna (Hartman) Gietzen. He was raised on the farm, educated at St. Clement's School and graduated from Glen Ullin High School. Bill was drafted in the U.S. Army and entered service Feb. 21, 1946. He served as a paratrooper with the 11th Army Airborne Division. Bill was discharged July 18, 1947. He returned to Glen Ullin and married his pre-war sweetheart, Mary Heaton, on Dec. 30, 1947. Following marriage, they settled on the family farm and began their family. Bill also worked off the farm for the Morton County ASCS, and several construction projects. Bill was involved in the North Dakota Right to Life, American Legion, and was a 4th Degree Knight, and past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Bill retired from farming in 1992. Bill died Jan. 25, while a resident of the Marian Manor, Glen Ullin. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gene and James; and one brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife, Mary, Glen Ullin; his children, Russell (Ahn), Glen Ullin, Glenn (Linda), Halliday, Mary, Fargo, Margaret, Tucson, Ariz., Mark, Wichita, Kan., Gregory (Lan), Los Alamitos, Calif., daughter-in-law, Rita, Mandan, Anna (Jay) Brown, Audubon, Minn. Aaron, Fayetteville, N.C., Hilary (Sara), Minot, Virginia (John) Saiki, DeSoto, Kan., Peter (Cindy), Glen Ullin, Catherine (Charlie) Holle, New Salem, and Frederick, Grand Forks; 63 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
