Bill was born on Oct. 15, 1926, in Pettibone, N.D., to Clark Manley Drake and Alma Beryl Smith. He had nine brothers and sisters, five of whom survive him. Read More	Obituary from The Independent Record 11/24/2009: William George Drake, 83, loving husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather, passed away on Nov. 21, 2009, from injuries he suffered from a fall at home. Bill was born on Oct. 15, 1926, in Pettibone, N.D., to Clark Manley Drake and Alma Beryl Smith. He had nine brothers and sisters, five of whom survive him. Bill's dad died in a farming accident when Bill was just 15 years old. Bill completed the 8th grade in school before embarking upon his working life to help support his mother, brothers and sisters. His mom died in 1980 while living in California. One of Bill's jobs led him to Scobey where he met the love of his life, Doris Amanda Lystad. They married on Jan. 20, 1945, and began raising a family of eight children, 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. On Feb. 14, 1945, Bill became a Marine and fought in World War II in the Pacific Theater. He recently spoke about having served in Saipan and Guam during his honorable service. Bill was discharged from the Marine Corps on Nov. 27, 1946, and returned home to his wife and daughter. Bill worked in a multitude of jobs including bartending, being a deputy sheriff, welding, farming, ranching, carpenter and as a heavy equipment operator. His last job was a heavy equipment operator for Charles Norman Excavating until he retired in 1989. Bill is survived by his wife, Doris; all eight of his children, Alice Realing (Howard), Clark (Marie-deceased), Larry (Susan), David (Penny), Richard (Lorrie), Diane, Bob (RoseAnn), and Susan Doane (Dale); and five of his brothers and sisters, Betty Dahn, Faye Schultz, Ione Harrington, Shirley Short and Dean Drake. He is also survived by his surrogate brother, Don Boyce, and surrogate son, Charles Norman. Bill was preceded in death by his father, Clark; mother, Beryl; sisters, Edna Drake and Myrtle Graff; and brothers Richard Guy Drake and Francis Drake. Honorably serving our country was and remains an important part of the Drake family tradition. Besides Bill, his brothers Guy, Francis and Dean all served in the U.S. Army. Guy made the ultimate sacrifice and is memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. William Tallon, son of Bill's sister Myrtle, also served in the U.S. Army, and like his uncle made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam and is also memorialized on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Myrtle's son, William Tallon also served in the U.S. Army, and lost his life from complications from the spraying of Agent Orange. Four of Bill's children also served in the military. Clark and Larry were drafted into the U.S. Army and served during the war in Vietnam. Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for six years. Diane enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for four years. She continues her service in the FBI. Clark's son, Scott Garrison, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served four years. Alice's husband, Howard Realing, enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his tour, including war time service in Vietnam. Alice's son, Steven Realing, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served four years, including war-time service during Desert Storm. David's son Dustin served in the Navy for four years. Bill was a founding member of the Lakeside Volunteer Fire Department in 1973 and retired from the department in 1991. He was also active in the local Good Sam Club for years. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Bill was a good man with a kind heart. He loved his wife and family, instilled a good work ethic in all of his children, served his country and loved life. He worked hard at everything he did. Bill could fix anything and should have been called an inventor. He could look at something that needed fixing, no matter how complicated, and make it work. He was so accomplished at taking care of farm animals that he should have been a veterinarian. He wore many different hats in his lifetime and was good at all of the jobs and tasks he took on. He loved horses, cows, dogs, camping, hunting, fishing, and most of all his family and friends. He will be sorely missed, but always loved. His family looks forward now to having him guide them further from a place free of pain and suffering. Graveside services will be held at the Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison on Friday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. A gathering of friends and family will be held at East Valley Volunteer Fire Department Station #2 at 2694 Valley Drive, East Helena, immediately following the service.
