SMITH, aged 43 years. Mrs. S. was born in Bartholomew county, Indiana, and with her parents, settled in a very early period of the history of this state on Henderson river. She was the daughter of the late Judge PENCE, who erected what was called Fort Pence for the protection of his family and neighbors during the Black Hawk war. At the age of eighteen, having lost her parents and being the oldest daughter of the family, the responsibility of acting the part of a mother to her younger brothers and sisters fell upon her. And so faithfully did she perform her duties in the position that those for whom she thus cared, will ever hold her in grateful remembrance. She experienced religion in 1846 and was married and settled in Henry County, Iowa in 1848 where she died after five months illness of consumption. An affectionate husband, three children, and many dear relatives and friends are left to mourn her departure, for she was one who ever had a kind word for the mourner, and a willing hand to help the sick and suffering. She was one, whose loss the circle of her acquaintances very deeply. But those who loved her do not mourn as those without hope.
