Read More	The Dakota Chief August 14, 1902 Page 4, Col. 2 A Sad Accident A telegraph message was received at this place from Sioux City, conveying the sad news of the sudden death of Philip Holzer of Monday night. Philip Holzer was for many years a resident of Buffalo County and but recently removed from this place to Sioux City. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Holzer for many years highly respected citizens of this county, and a brother of Mrs. N. A. Keeler and Mrs. C. R. Daniels and Frank Holzer, of this place, all of whom with his bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction. He was a member in good standing of the Gann Valley A.O.U.W. lodge and carried a beneficiary insurance policy of $1000.00 in that order for the benefit of his wife and family. This is the first death that has occurred in the membership of the Gann Valley A.O.U.W. since its organization. The Sioux City Journal of Tuesday contains the following account of the sad accident which resulted in his death: “While giving an alarm of fire this morning Philip Holzer met a tragic death. Holzer was a section hand for the Illinois Central road, living at 4049 Harrison Avenue, Leeds. Awakened by what he believed to be an alarm of fire, he ran from his home to the fire station to give the alarm. This was at 12:30 this morning, and shortly afterwards he was dead. Holzer was in his bed after a hard day’s work when he heard steam blowing off at the Mystic Milling company’s flour mill in that suburb. Thinking it was an alarm of fire he dressed hastily and ran to the fire station and aroused Fireman Frank Harrison. Fireman Harrison quickly dressed and stepped out of the rear window of the second story upon the addition used for the barn. This addition is not as wide as the main building, and in doing so Harrison had to step on the protuding edge. Holzer was not aware of the situation in stepping out of the window, he failed to step on the barn roof. He fell a distance of twenty feet to the ground, striking on his head and shoulders. Fireman Harrison hurried to his side as soon as possible. Holzer was unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. Harrison ran for Dr. McCartney but life was extinct a few moments after his arrival. The doctor said that Holzer had evidently ruptured a blood vessel in his lungs, from which he bled to death. The body was carried to the fire station and the man’s wife notified. Holzer was a hard working man. Besides his wife he leaves two children, Edna, aged 4 years, and Charles aged 1 year. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. Mrs. Holzer was overcome with grief at the sad accident.
