Mr. Hoffman was washing his car late Saturday afternoon when stricken with a brain hemorrhage. He was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Sioux City and passed on there at 6:10 Monday morning, January 13, without gaining consciousness. He was 52 years of age. Although he had lived in this vicinity only a few years he was one of the most popular men in this community, loved by all who knew him. Philip C. Hoffman was born at Caledonia, Minnesota August 8, 1894, next to the youngest of ten children born to Nicholas and Anna (Wagner) Hoffman. He graduated from Caledonia High School and Business College at La Crosse. While visiting his sister, Mrs. Frank Miller, in Alton he met his future wife, Miss Florence Henrich and they were married July 4, 1918. They lived on the farm which Mr. Hoffman owned and operated near Caledonia until 1920 when they moved to Lennox, South Dakota. There he was employed by F.M. Slagle and Company and learned the lumber business from Mrs. Hoffman’s brother, F.E. Henrich of the Lennox yard. In 1923 he was made manager of the Slagle yard at Sutherland, where he was president of the Commercial Club and member of the fire company. In 1943 he brought the Schneider estate farm 1 ½ miles east of Alton and built up the place to be one of the model stock farms of this vicinity. Surviving are his wife Florence and three children, Edward, Evelyn and Philip; four sisters: Mrs. Thomas Graf, Mrs. Kathryn Thimmish, Mrs. Margaret Ernster, all of Caledonia, Ray Hoffman of Austin, Minnesota and Mrs. Frank Miller of Minneapolis. Funeral services with Requiem High Mass were held on Wednesday morning at St. Mary' Church. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Mr. Hoffman was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Mr. Hoffman was well known for his ready wit, friendly manner and interest in boys of all ages, and numbered many young people among his friends. He was always the “life of the party” in any gathering. At. A family party Thursday evening before his passing in honor of his father-in-law, E.S. Henrich, whose birthday was observed that day, he had been in fine spirits and apparently in the best of health.
