Interment will be in the Neosho Rapids Cemetery. ******************************************************* The Emporia Gazette, 02 Nov 1925, Tuesday FUNERAL OF PHILIP DAVIS Funeral services for Philip Davis, who died Friday evening, were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist Protestant church in Neosho Rapids. The services were conducted by Rev. O. M. Showalter, pastor of the First Baptist church of Emporia. The pallbearers were John Sleisher, Winfield Andrews, Robert Lane, Peter Reber, C. F. Lane and Phil Martin. Interment was in the Mt. Hope cemetery at Neosho Rapids. Philip Davis died Friday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. T. L. Craig, 119 South Merchant, Emporia, after an illness of two weeks. He was born October 21, 1833 in Marion County, Indiana. His parents were Mary and Obadiah Davis. Philip was one of a family of eleven children, of whom three sisters are living. He united with the Baptist church at Bethel, Ind., in 1853, and he was married to Mary Jane Allen, October 11, 1855, at Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana. Soon after his marriage he moved to Iowa, but after a few years there his father and other relatives moved to the vicinity of Neosho Rapids, and he decided to come to Kansas. So with his wife and three small daughters he made the trip in a prairie schooner in the fall of 1862. He homesteaded a farm east of Neosho Rapids and endured the struggles and hardships which were the lot of the Kansas pioneers. Often he took his wagon and team and freighted goods from Leavenworth as there were no railroads in eastern Kansas in those days. Philip Davis was one of the band of men organized to drive Price from Kansas after the Price raid. After living more than fifty years in and near Neosho Rapids Mrs. Davis died March 23, 1915, and after her death Mr. Davis spent most of his time in Emporia. He is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Mary Eaton, of Muscatine, Iowa; Mrs. Amanda McCartney, of Neodesha, and Mrs. Martha Pigman, of Neosho Rapids; two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Craig, of Emporia, and Mrs. Alice Neilson, of East St. Louis, Mo.; two sons, G. H. Davis and H. A. Davis, both of Emporia, and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Alice Neilson came from East St. Louis to help her sister and her brothers care for Mr. Davis in his last sickness.
