Galligan was born in Chickasaw County, Lawler, Iowa, December 20, 1856 and died October 13, 1932 at the age of 76 years and 10 months. Two years ago he was stricken with pneumonia and since that time has been in very poor health. In his death the town and County have lost one of its choicest men who resided in this county during his entire life. He was one of the most honorable and respected citizens of this community and one whose soul was reflected in everyday life in his friendliness and consideration for others and in his honesty and fair dealings with everyone. He was a good loving husband and father, a devoted member of the Catholic Church and his one ambition in life was to do the Will of the Lord and to set an example for others. Philip Galligan was the son of Patrick and Mary Galligan who were early pioneer residents of Chickasaw County. He was born on a farm homesteaded by his parents in 1854 and lived on the same farm until 1912 when he moved to Lawler and resided there until his death. Mr. Galligan was united in marriage on May 20, 1885 to Miss Mary O'Byrne. To them seven children were born, William and Byron preceding him in death. He is survived by his wife and five children: Mrs. James Feeney, Anne Galligan and Frank Galligan all of Lawler, Iowa and Dr. J.C. Galligan of Mankato, Minn., and Carl Galligan of La Crosse, Wis. He is also survived by four sisters and one brother: Mrs. Mary Burns of Lawler, Mrs. Katie O'Donnell of Denver, Colo., Margaret and Teresa Galligan of San Diego, Calif., P.J. Galligan of Washington, D.C. Also nine grand children. The funeral services were held at Mt. Carmel church Saturday October 15th, Rev. John O'Donnell read the requiem mass and in his sermon paid high tribute for the wonderful example set by Mr. Galligan. His remains were laid to rest in the shadow of Mt. Carmel church where he received so many Christian blessings. The pall bearers were his nephews; Eugene Canty, Frank O'Byrne, Claude Fitzsimmons, Pete O'Byrne, William O'Byrne, and William Quirk. Honorary pall bearers were Thomas Daly, L. A. Larsen, Mike Kelly, Frank Shekleton, John Sheridan, and Joe McNally. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were; Dr. And Mrs. C. J. Galligan, Mankato, Minn., Mr. And Mrs. C. P. Galligan and Harriet Elizabeth of La Crosse, Wisconsin, Mrs. B. Bollinger, Lake Andes, So. Dakota, Miss Mary Bollinger, Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. Katie O'Byrne, William O'Byrne, Albert Lea, Minn., Mr. And Mrs. J. N. LaVoque and Harriet LaVoque, La Crosse, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. L.E. LaVoque also of La Crosse, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Mullen of Britt, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mullen, Hutchins, Iowa, Mrs. Bill Doughan, Algona, Iowa, Monica Woods, Fairbanks, Iowa and Kathryn Killerlain of Fayette, Iowa.
