He was born May 3, 1919, on a farm near Lakeview in Todd County to Boldewyn and Anthonetta (Risseeuw) Odens. He came to the Springfield area with his family when he was two years old. He attended Hitt Country School through the eighth grade. Phil served in the U.S. Army from 1940 through 1945 during World War II. He married Eva D. Kastein on April 22, 1943, at the Emmanuel Reformed Church parsonage, rural Springfield. Four children were born to their union. Phil and Eva retired from farming and moved into Springfield in 1970. He owned and operated Phil's TV & Appliance & Service until 1983. Phil became a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church on Jan. 14, 1940. He also was a member of the Dwight Wood American Legion Post 132 since 1945. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, pitching horseshoes, pitching in softball leagues and games, and playing pinochle. He is survived by his wife, Eva; children: Anita (Laurence) Zastrow, Pierre; Verald (Gloria), Springfield; and Ellen (Ray) Thorpe, Aberdeen; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother: Gary (Sandy), Avon; three sisters: Winifred Kastein, Marjorie (Harold) Ludens and Beverly (Robert) Jelsma, all of Springfield; four sisters-in-law: Evelyn Odens, Alice Odens, Gertrude Wesseling and Ruth Tolsma; former daughter-in-law: Rita Odens; and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one son, his parents, two brothers, two twin great-grandsons and three brothers-in-law
