Wayne, Ind., as a result of severe injuries suffered in an accident August 4, 1977. He was working with a state highway crew at Ohio 66 and U.S. 24 north of Defiance when he was reportedly hit by a moving cement saw. He was severely cut in the neck, right shoulder, and lower back. He was born Sept. 7, 1954, in Defiance, the son of Richard J. and Doris (Marshaus) Heilman, 115 Main Street. Surviving are his parents, one brother, John, 1761 Maumee Dr. and one sister, Mrs. William (Suzanne) Hultz, Dohoney Road. He was a 1972 graduate of Defiance High School where he was president of the senior class and announcer for the Defiance High School Band. He was to have graduated from Ohio State University this fall where he was majoring in economics. He was a member of the Men's Glee Club of Ohio State and was a member of the Ohio State Football team as a "walk-on." He went to the Rose Bowl in 1976 as a member of the team. Phil worked at different jobs while attending school with Ruess & Snyder, Dinner Bell foods, Central Foundry and this summer for the Ohio Department of Transportation. He was a life long member of St. John's Lutheran Church and its church choir. Funeral services will be held at the church at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, officiated by Rev. David Koenig and Rev. Howard Fabricius. Burial will be in St. Stephen's Lutheran Cemetery, South Ridge. Friends may call at Mast and Mock Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Sunday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, and at the church one hour prior to the service. Contributions may be made to Ohio State University in the form of a scholarship for walk-on football players and to St. John's Lutheran Church and its agencies. Defiance Crescent News
