REED DIES FROM GUN WOUND IN HIS ABDOMEN MILLERSTOWN FARMER GOES TO KILL CAT AND WIFE FINDS HIM DEAD LATER Tragedy lay hidden in the determination of Philip M. Reed, 65, well known farmer living about one mile west of Millerstown, to kill a cat which had been bothering his chickens, about 12:15 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. About an hour after taking his shotgun from its usual place and announcing his mission, his lifeless body was found in a buggy shed by his elderly wife. A discharge from his own gun had penetrated the abdomen and death was almost instantaneous. Coroner I. W. Armpriester found no evidence of suicide and pronounced the death due to accidental discharge of a 12-gauge shotgun. The story told by the elderly wife, who has lived with her husband for a number of years on the farm just a mile west of Millerstown on the Reed road, dismissed any thought of suicide. According to Mrs. Reed, a cat had been bothering their chickens and shortly after 12 o'clock Wednesday, Reed came into the house from the barn and declared his intention of killing the troublesome animal. He took his prized shotgun from its usual place and went out to the barn. That was the last time he was seen until Mrs. Reed went to the barn to summon him for his dinner. She did not find him in the barn and went to the buggy shed nearby. There she discovered the body of her husband, lying upon the floor of the shed. The double barreled shotgun was lying beneath a buggy not more than three feet from the body. The discovery was made about 1 o'clock. The wife summoned a son-in-law, Ray Ward, who lives about a quarter of a mile west of the Reed home on the same road. Ward came to the house and called Dr. W. A. Yinger, of Rosewood, although he was certain that the wounded man was dead. Dr. Yinger, upon his arrival at the scene of the tragedy, pronounced the man dead and called Coroner I. W. Armpriester at Urbana. Coroner Armpriester found no evidence of self-destruction and found the death accidental. It is believed that the aged man stood the gun up against the buggy and when he hurriedly reached for it latter, the trigger became engaged with some part of the buggy and the gun was discharged. Mrs. Reed talked freely and said that her husband had no cause to even think of taking his life and that he had been very cheerful, even more so this winter than ever before. She said his only worry was over some of his stock. The body was removed to the house by men present, and was turned over to Bert Richeson, St. Paris undertaker, who arrived shortly after the discovery. Besides the wife, two daughters and one son survive: Mrs. J. R. Amspaugh, New Carlisle; Mrs. Ray Ward, Millerstown; James F. Reed, former magistrate in Harrison township. Three grandchildren are also left. Mr. Reed was born near the place where he had lived, April 1, 1861, a son of Cyrus Reed and Phoebe Comer Reed and had always lived in the community. He was married November 20, 1880. Funeral services will be conducted in the home Saturday at 1:30 p.m., in charge of Rev. Huffman, Baptist church, St. Paris. Interment will be made in Spring Grove cemetery in charge of Undertaker Richeson.
