They anchored in what is now known as Fort Point Harbour and set up their first camp site on Cape Jellison, which the Penobscots called Wassaumkeag, "water which flows over rocks," in honour of the underwater islands that lay at the mouth of the river. The land on which the village of Stockton Springs is located was then a tribal encampment called Aguhasidek, "otter slides." It has been about that long since any freshwater otters slid down stream banks here to swim and breed in local marshes, though seals occasionally float in the harbour. Otters were among the first casualties of extensive hunting, followed by intensive farming and human settlement. A garrison was established and Fort Pownal built immediately, along with a small Anglican Chapel, of bricks baked in England and wood cut on the site. Until 1783, when the St. Croix River became the boundary between Maine and Canada, Fort Pownal on the Penobscot was the easternmost settlement in Maine. Note: According to his death record, Thomas was born in Bristol, ME about 1789. Also Philip never was in the same town once from census to census. We know that Ezekiel Morey served in the trainband of Stephen Gatchell. There are also connections between James Hunter (Philip's father-in-law) and Stephen Gatchell. It is from these connections between the Morey and Hunter families with Stephen Gatchell we are "assuming" Philip, being a son of Ezekiel, married into the Hunter family.
