To those who have been intimate with him the announcement is not altogether unexpected, though it seems but a short time since he was among us in the ordinary transactions of life. He has been in poor health for some months and of late has declined rapidly, until last evening when he passed away. Mr Simmons was well known and universally esteemed in this community where he has passed a long and useful life. He was a man of unswerving integrity and spotless reputation. In 1868 he was chosen deacon of the United Congregational church as the successor of Nathan B. Hammett which position he held at the time of his death. Though not a politician and having no desire for office he has fitly and ably represented the third ward in the city council and might have held other positions I public life had he been willing to accept them. Philip Simmons is a name that has become almost a household word in our city. A good citizen and a faithful and consistent Christian. All who knew him have learned to respect and honor him. His death will be generally regretted and his virtues will be long remembered.
