Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Burial will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the nursing home. Philippine was born at home on the farm outside of Strasburg on May 1, 1911. She was the only child of Katherine Bichler and Bruno Schell. At the age of 1, she lost her father to a ruptured appendix. Her mother remarried Peter Schell, the brother of Bruno, which was not uncommon at that time, and had nine more children, Peter, Joe, Jack, Anton, Eugene, Cecelia (Max) Baumgartner, Ann (Anton) Braun, Katie (Eugene) Malsom and Louella (Roy) Jacobson. Philippine married Anton Lipp and gave birth to five children, Phyllis, Clara, Jolene, Tyrone and Kathy. Money was scarce during the depression years and she worked a variety of jobs to help keep food on the table. When her husband, Anton, went to serve in the Army during World War II, she managed the household and five children on her own. She lost Anton to brain cancer when he was only 49 years old. She married Kasper Lipp in 1966 and spent 37 years with him in Bismarck. She lost her oldest daughter, Phyllis, to ALS in 1993. Her and Kasper moved to Edgewood Vista, an assistant living facility, in April 2003. Kasper passed away in June 2003. She remained a resident there until 2007, when she relocated to the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center until her death on Dec. 6, 2010. Less than five feet tall, she was like a white tornado whirring around never sitting still. Over the years, she painted homes for contractors, cleaned wild game for hunters, cooked in several restaurants including the Greyhound Bus Depot in the late '50s, took in ironing and volunteered at the Senior Center in Bismarck in her later years. In between working a variety of jobs, she loved playing cards, fishing, crocheting, dancing and being around people. In her 70s, she decided she wanted to learn how to swim and golf even though the golf club was almost as tall as she was. She will be remembered for her cooking, especially her carmel rolls, a clean house and her unending energy. Her strong will and perseverance took her to the age of 99. She is survived by one son, Tyrone (Beckie) Lipp, Cameron, Wis., and their children, Tony and Steven; three daughters, Clara (Harold) Lewis, Newbury Park, Calif., and their children, Michelle, Bill and Nancy, Jolene (Jim) Jaeger, Poway, Calif., and their children, Scott, Eric and Laura, and Kathy Landgren, Bismarck, and her children, Tim and Bryan; Phyllis' children, Clyde, Adele, Landi and Tia; two sisters, Louella Jacobson, Spokane, Wash., and Ann Braun, Eugene, Ore.; one brother, Jack Schell, Richmond, Calif.; three sisters-in-law, Alvina Schell, Emelia Schwab, Aberdeen, S.D., and Mary Lipp, Strasburg; one brother-in-law, Eugene Malsom, Strasburg Nursing Home; one aunt, Theresa Fettig, California; along with many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Anton Lipp; her second husband, Kasper Lipp; one daughter, Phyllis Solmonson; one granddaughter, Shari Lewis Sheveland; her parents, Bruno Schell, Peter Schell and Katherine Schell; her brothers, Peter, Joe, Anton and Eugene; and her sisters, Katie Malsom and Cecelia Baumgartner.
