Dec 7, 1922 - Carroll Times - Phillip Beechel, a former resident of Carroll county, died at Wayne, Neb. Wednesday, November 29, after a year's illness with epithelloma or skin cancer. His remains were brought to Carroll and funeral services, conducted by Rev. Ellas Handy, pastor of the Methodist church, were held at the Methodist church Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Burial was made in the Carroll cemetery beside his wife, who died 28 years ago. Phillip Beechel was born in the territory of Alsace Lorraine, France, May 10, 1849. He come to America with his parents at the age of eight years, residing with them at Hooppole, Illinois, until he reached his maturity. In 1875 he came to Carroll county and located on a farm five miles northeast of Carroll. He was married to Miss Mary E. Mohler July 9, 1878. Some years after her death he moved to Fairfax, S.D., where he farmed until 1911, when a serious injury forced him to undertake less strenuous work. The last few years he conducted a small harness business at Burke, S.D., until he was forced to seek medical and surgical aid. He made a trip to Rochester, but the doctors said nothing could be done and November 29, 1921, he entered the hospital at Wayne, Neb., where he was cared for and his sufferings relieved as much as possible. He died a year to the day after entering the hospital. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years. He is survived by five children: Mrs John Halsted, of Fairfax, S.D.; Edith E. Beechel, of Wayne, Neb.; Charles H. Beechel, of Pine City, Minn.; John M. Beechel, of Oldham, S.D.; and Mrs. Harry Bessire, of Laurel, Neb. All the children were present at the funeral except Mrs. Halsted, who was unable to come. Other relatives at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Mohler, of Lake View, and Mr. and Mrs. Dan Lanniger, of Boone.
