Read More	Obituary Phillip Clayton "Kirk" Kirkegaard, 81, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at his residence. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Clayton was born June 2, 1922, in Aurora, Colo., to Phillip Christian and Dora Marie (Tanderup) Kirkegaard. The family moved first to Beresford, S.D., then to Sioux City. He graduated from Central High School in 1940. In November 1940, he began working in the milling department as a machinist at Albertson and Company. He was active in the International Association of Machinists Union for 35 years, and served on the negotiating committee. Forty-four years later, in 1985, he retired from his position as foreman of the milling department. He served in World War II as a machinist's mate in the U.S. Navy from Nov. 28, 1942 to Feb. 25, 1946. He served with a construction battalion in the Pacific Islands. On Jan. 18, 1949, Clayton married Ruth Jane Allum of Herrick, S.D. They started a family and in 1955, moved to an acreage on the outskirts of Sioux City. There, in the tradition of his father, they raised vegetables, animals and children. He enjoyed woodworking (making toys for his grandkids), gardening (growing sweet corn and tomatoes for his grandkids), mules (giving rides to his grandkids) and most of all his family. He was one of 10 children, Marian Hintz (deceased), Leo and his wife, Florence of Sioux City, Faye Cobb of Lenexa, Kan., Dale and his wife, Pat of Fresno, Calif., Milo and his wife, Rita of Hastings, Neb., Robert of Sioux City, Virgil (deceased) and his wife, Carolyn of Sioux City, Paul (deceased) and his wife, Patricia of Sioux City and Wayne and his wife, Mary of Lenexa, Kan. Clayton and Ruth have eight children, Colin (wife, Kathy) of Mitchell, S.D., Paula (husband, Gideon Kilonzo) of Mission, S.D., Todd of Sioux City, Kirk (wife, Ann) of Indianola, Iowa, Kay (husband, Dan Zebarth) of Littleton, Colo., Bonnie of Sioux City, Dora (husband, Glen Houts) of Sioux City and Carin Ruth (husband, Ken Cool) of Castle Rock, Colo. There are 22 grandchildren and a great-grandson, Phillip Cameron Kirkegaard "P.C.K.", the fifth. A plain spoken man, he had a philosophy of life he shared with his family. When confronted with a challenging situation, he would often lessen any negative impact by reasoning "in 100 years from now, it won't make any difference" and "that's just a part of life." Brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend -- he will always be a part of our lives, and the world will only be a better place when -- in 100 years -- his legacy is still a part of it. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Clayton, may be made to Hospice of Siouxland.
