Both of these concerns are celebrating their 100th anniversary in Tipton this year. The organization was founded in 1852 by W. B. Young and Mr. Nichols had been associated with the firm for 57 years. Mr. Nichols, who resided at 228 North Conde street, had been ill for four months. He was one of the oldest active funeral directors in Indiana. Services are planned for 10 a. m. Thursday in the Kemp Methodist church, with Rev. Ben Kendall and Rev. Charles H. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview cemetery. The body is lying in state at Young's Funeral home, where it will remain until 9 a. m. Thursday, when it will be taken to the Methodist church to lie in state until the hour of service. A native of Ripley county, Mr. Nichols was born July 1, 1865, the son of Benjamin and Julia Ann Nichols. He was the last surviving member of a large family. The deceased came to Tipton in 1893 and purchased half interest in a furniture store which was known as Reed and Nichols, furniture and undertaken firm. Two years later he accepted employment with S.G. Young's furniture store, now Young's, with which he was associated until his death. He married Margaret Cleary in Greenfield, April 29, 1903, and the couple has resided in Tipton ever since. They were the parents of one son. Besides being a funeral director and a furniture dealer, the deceased was a director of the Tipton Building and Loan Association for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Elks lodge, the Kemp Methodist church and Austin Lodge No. 128, F. and A. M. Survivors include the wife, Margaret; one son, Robert F. Nichols, 216 West Jefferson street, who is active in both businesses; and two grandchildren, Philip and Nan who attend schools in Tipton.
