Born Nov. 24, 1932, in Jacksonville, Ohio, he was the eldest son of the late Eugene James Goldsberry and Bernice Adeline Kittle Goldsberry. Phil graduated from Shade School with the class of 1950. Upon turning 18 years of age the following November, he enlisted in the United States Navy serving as a shipboard electronics mate in the Amphibious Forces aboard the USS Proserpine ARL-21 and the USS Hollis APD-86 from 1951-1954. Upon discharge from the U.S. Navy, he was employed by the McBee Co. in Athens as a journeyman machinist in research and development, and later in the sales and service field office of Royal McBee in Detroit, Mich. Phil started night school at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Mich., while working for Royal McBee in Detroit. He later obtained a bachelor's degree in biological sciences at Ohio State University in 1967. Upon graduation, he was employed by the Ohio State University Cooperative Extension Services as 4-H science agent in Washington County (Marietta) Ohio. He received a master's degree from Ohio University in personnel management in 1971 and became the service-safety director with the city of Athens from 1969-1981. Upon relocation to Tucson, Ariz., in 1981, he became executive director of the Central Arizona Council of Governments in Florence, Ariz. (now located in Apache Junction, Ariz.). He is a 50-year-plus member of the Athens Masonic Paramuthia Lodge F&AM, Athens Chapter 39 Royal Arch Masons Athens Council Royal and Select Masters and Athens Commandery 15 Knights Templar. He is a life member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association, the Ohio University Trustee's Academy and the University of Arizona President's Club. He and his wife have established endowed student scholarships at The University of Arizona and Ohio University and are lifetime members of Shade Community Center. Phil loved the analytical challenges of learning new skills and, thus, became an accomplished craftsman having built a second home near Shade, Ohio, and completed many construction projects of all sizes over the years. He also enjoyed Canadian fishing trips with his friends, reading and traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad. He had a quiet way about him, he was highly principled, honest and true to his beliefs with a genuine warm heart. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Roy Leslie Goldsberry.
