Description	:	Philip Lathrop was born ca 1819 in Litchfield, Ct. He married Hannah Bowman, and their child Samantha Lathrop was born 18 Aug 1841 in Ohio. Hannah died at a young age in 1850. Philip's second wife was Eunice Ellen Francisco from New York and they moved about 1851 to northern Iowa. In 1854 Philip built the Lathrop House, a three-story frame building which was a hotel. Read More	Philip Lathrop was born ca 1819 in Litchfield, Ct. He married Hannah Bowman, and their child Samantha Lathrop was born 18 Aug 1841 in Ohio. Hannah died at a young age in 1850. Philip's second wife was Eunice Ellen Francisco from New York and they moved about 1851 to northern Iowa. In 1854 Philip built the Lathrop House, a three-story frame building which was a hotel. The building was destroyed by fire in the winter of 1857. At the time his house burned, Mr Lathrop was in Des Moines, lobbying for a bill to locate the Deaf and Dumb Asylum at Frankville, Iowa. In the 1856 census for Winneshiek County, Iowa, I found Philip married to Ellen. He was listed as a merchant, and they had lived in Iowa four years. His oldest child, Samantha, was 13. Philip and Ellen's son Charles Philip was one year old and was born in Iowa. In the 1860 Winneshiek County, Iowa census they had another child Lena, who was three. The family moved ca 1868 to Cleopatra, Missouri. The 1870 Mercer County, Mo census showed Philip as a blacksmith and 50 years old, his wife Ellen 51, their son Charles Philip 15, Lena E (Lennie) 13 and Minnie 8. All three children born in Iowa. Samantha was married first to Augustus Reynolds, and they had one child, Herby. Augustus was killed in the Civil War and Samantha was married second in 1864 to G W Wheeler (born in NY). They had three children: Lena who was born in 1869, Jessie who was born in 1871, and Glen who was born in 1876. Lena told younger family members that her grandfather Philip looked like Teddy Roosevelt. They lived in Missouri until 1893 when they moved to Lineville, Iowa. Philip died on 13 Jan 1894, aged 74 years and 11 months. According to his obituary, he was a man of more than average intelligence and education, and he wielded a potent influence in the community in which he lived. He always upheld what he conceived to be right. In public matters, he was outspoken and firm in expressing his views, but the honesty and sincerity of his purpose always compelled respect.
