The Creighton, Nebraska July 17, 1931-Special to the News: Mr. and Mrs. Philip Schaum, residents of Creighton and vicinity since 1903, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here, Wednesday. A dinner consisting of fried chicken and all that goes with it was served to thirty relatives and friends at the noon hour. Following the dinner, they renewed their marriage vows, the Rev. Wilson of the Methodist Church performing the ceremony. A procession was formed, little girls, guests at the dinner acting as flower girls and ring bearer, and strewing flowers before the ckouple, A sister of Mrs. Schaum, Mrs. Gertrude Perkins of Omaha, as attendant to the bride of fifty years. Mrs. Nancy Perkins, and another sister, Mrs. A. C. (Christena) Walton, were the only two in attendance, who attended the wedding of fifty years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Schaum were married at Troy Mills, Iowa, and lived on a farm in that viciity for a number of years. They came to Creighton vicinity with their family of nine children in 1903. They lived on farms in this community until fourteen years ago when they moved into Creighton. One more child was born to them after coming to Knox County. Two of the family of ten children, Earl and Harlan have passed away. Mr. Schaum is 78 years of age and Mrs. Schaum is 70. He is a native of Germany, and Mrs. Schaum was born at Troy Mills, Iowa. Both enjoy good health and are unusually active for their years. Of the eight children living,, four were with them for their celebration. They are, Arthur William Schaum, Absalom Louis Schaum, Richard Schaum of Creighton, and Fred Philip Schaum of Page, Nebraska. The others who live away from here are Curtis Otto Schaum of Covina, California; Ole Walter Schaum of Westport, Oregon; Mrs. Cora Ann Whitney of Powder River, Montana and Mrs. Zora Elizabeth Frederickson of Alameda, California. Other relatives from a distance were, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Perkins and two grandchildren, Warren and Vivian Chester, Omaha Nebraska;, Mrs. William (Janie) Dudley, a niece of Mrs. Schaum of Troy Mills; Iowa; Mrs. Jesse (Ethel) Porter, a niece of Walker, Iowa; Leslie Peyton, a nephew, Coggon, Iowa; Joseph Walton (brother-in-law) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. and Mrs. Alfred Clinton Walton and daughter, Laura Helen of Creighton, Nebraska; Mrs. Otto Hazenplug an children, and the Rev. Mr. Wilson, all of Creighton, were guesta also. Mr. and Mrs. Schaum were presented with two $5 gold peieces at the celebration, each bearing the date of their wedding in 1881. A grandaughter, Sheila Schaum, presented her grandmother with a wrist watch. ~0bit~Creighton's Oldest Resident Died At Age Of 87 Years--Funeral services were conducted for Phillip Schaum, Thursday afternoon at the Hengstler and Son Chapel by the Rev. G.B. Anderson, pastor of the Federated Church. A cerebal hemorhage and paralytic stroke suffered eight weeks ago, caused Mr. Schaum's death. He was Creighton's oldest man, and had he lived until Friday he would have attained the age of 88 years. Next July 15, he and his wife would have observed their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Mr. Schaum was born in Germany on January 31, 1853. He came to America when young and lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until about 17 years of age when he went to work in Iowa. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Peyton at Troy Mills, Iowa July 15, 1881. To this union, ten sons and daughters were born. They made their home in Iowa until 1903, when they came to Nebraska. For the past twenty-four years they have made their home in Creighton. Surviving are his wife, Mary; seven sons and daughters, Curtis Otto Schaum, Covina, California; Absalom Lewis Schaum and Arthur William Schaum Creighton; and Ole Walter Schaum of Portland, Oregon; Fred Philip Schaum of Missouri, and Richard Schaum, in the United States Coast Artillery in the Panama Canal Zone; one daughter, Mrs. Zora Fishback, Elmonte, California. A daughter, Cora, and two sons, Harland and Earl, preceded him in death. Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
