Read More	From file of obituaries in the Homer Library, Homer, Michigan Former Index Editor, P.W. Heath Dies Phil W Heath, Abilene postmaster for 13 years, dies Saturday night at his home at 506 N. Cedar, of a heart ailment following an illness which had confined him to bed for three weeks. He was 77 years old on May 27. Heath was born on a farm near Homer, Michigan, had been a resident of Abilene since 1900 when he purchased an interest in the old Abilene Chronicle. He had long been active in Democratic politics and had served several terms as Democratic county chairman. He was appointed postmaster by the late President Roosevelt in February of 1934 and served in that capacity until his death. During the past year he was president of the Kansas Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters, relinquishing the past at the convention in Topeka less than two months ago. Heath was on of a number of local business men who signed letters or recommendation fro General Dwight D Eisenhower's entry into West Point. He was the youngest of five sons of Cyrus V and Margaret E Heath. In his early years he worked as farm boy, delivery boy, grocery clerk, factory mechanic and bookkeeper. He attended night and commercial schools and was a graduate accountant. In 1892 at the age of 21 he became the publisher of his home town newspaper, THE HOMER INDEX, HOMER, MICHIGAN. In 1895 he sold the business and for the following five years worked as printer and reporter on newspapers in Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, and Kansas. He was continuously in the newspaper or printing business in Abilene from 1900 to 1935, being the sole owner of the Chronicle from 1911- to 1924. He retained a financial interest in the paper until 1927 when he opened a commercial printing plant. Later he established the Abilene Advocate a weekly paper which has not be published for several years. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Edna E Heath, one son Bruce C Heath, a granddaughter, Phyllis Ann and one brother Fred Heath of Homer, Michigan. Funeral Services were held at the Eicholtz chapel at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8. Burial in Abilene cemetery. Service were conducted by Dr David Townley and Dr Fuller Bergstresser.
