Truax Passes Away at His Home in this City Tuesday The in habitants of this city and vicinity were greatly surprised and shocked Tuesday forenoon when the rumor became current on our streets that P.A. Truax was dead. Few knew that he was sick, as it had been but a few days since he was about town attending to business affairs. He was first taken sick Friday with what was at that time termed lung fever, and continued to grow worse. His condition was first considered dangerous Monday night, when he was seized with Typoid pneumonia, growing rapidly worse until the end, which came about 10:30 o'clock next morning. Mr. Truax was one of the most widely known and most generally liked men in the county, there being scarcely a man in all Jackson who had not met him in business or official capacity or seen him ion duty at the court house, where he has served year after year as bailiff. He has also had duty as deputy sheriff, constable, alderman and in other official capacities, and has always been found faithful, reliable and honest, the large number of his friends attesting to his popularity. Not only was his public life that of a model citizen, but his home life was ever pleasant, his wife and children not knowing what it was to receive from his lips a cross word. Philo A. Truax was born in Missisqui county, Canada East, May 11, 1832, and came to Iowa with his father's family in 1849. March 25, 1856 he was united in marriage to Melita Tubbs, and to them were born three children---Jenni, Frank and Mary C. July 27, 1871, he was married to Julia E. Wilder. To them there were born four children. He leaves to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father, four children---Mrs. Walter K. Maxwell, Mrs. John S. Laird, Fred E., and Marguerete; also one brother--Dr. G. Truax of Tallapoosa, Georgia, and three sisters---Mrs. Diantha Gage of San Jose, California, Mrs. Hattie Cotton of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Mrs. Ellen Wright of this city. Funeral services were held at the home this afternoon at 1:30 and at the church at 2:00, participated in by Helion Lodge, No. 36, A.F. & A. M., of which he was an honored member. Rev. W.C. Macurdy, of the M.E. church officiating. Newspaper article: The funeral of P.A. Truax, who died suddenly from typhoid pneumonia at his home in this city Tuesday, Jan., 18, 1898, at 10:30 o'clock and was largely attended, the Masonic order, of which deceased was a member, having charge of the services. A brief service was held at the house, when the funeral cortege marched to the church, where a quartet, composed of Messrs. Jno. J. Miller, D.T. Bauman and Mesdames. F. H. Wilson and O.C. Kucheman sang a plaintive song, followed by prayer by Henry Clark. Rev. W.C. Macurdy delivered the funeral address. The wreathes and flowers used on this occasion were very beautiful and particularly the emblematic design, representing the square and compass. Interment took place at Mr. Hope according tot he Masonic ritual. Following are a few biographical notes: P.A. Truax was born in Missique county, Canada East, May 11, 1832 and came with his parents to Iowa in 1849. March 25, 1856, he was married to Miss Melita Tubbs, and three children were born to them, viz., Jennie, Frank, and Marcy C. Later on the two former children and his wife passed away, leaving only Mr C. surviving, and who became the wife of W.K. Maxwell. Mr. Truax was again married, in July 1871, to Miss Julia E. Wilder, whom with three children, Frances, Fred, and Marguerite, still survive. Deceased was a man well known to a large circle of friends on account of his genial manners and the official capacities which he had filled. Besides being a member of the Masonic order he was also a member of the A.O. U. W., and we understand carried an insurance policy in that order to the value of $3,000
