Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Valley City, with the Rev. Gerard Braun officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church, Valley City, with the Rev. Gerard Braun officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Philomine Merkes was born July 24, 1910, in Bluffton, Minn., the daughter of William and Amellia (Scharrenbroch) Merkes. She moved to New Jersey as a young girl to live with her sister, Susan, where they operated a music store. She and Susan later moved to California, where they operated a restaurant. She married Hubert R. Kunze on June 11, 1934, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dazey. They farmed in rural Valley City for many years. Hubert died on Aug. 23, 1985. Shortly after his death, Philomine moved to an apartment in Valley City. She moved to Bismarck in 1994, and had been a resident at the Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan for the last 19 months. She was an active member of St. Catherine Circle for 34 years, and served as its chairwoman. She also served for many years in the Eagles Auxiliary and as a 4-H leader. She was also a member of the Farmers Union. Philomine is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Clarence Ripplinger, Bismarck; her granddaughter, Robin Renae Nelson, Bismarck; her great-granddaughter, Nicole Nelson; and her sister, Susan Paulson, Mesa, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Gary; four brothers, William, Carl, George and Tony Merkes; and her sister, Mamie. Contributor: John Jorgensen (49735297)
