Rank: Sergeant Alt Name: P.M. / Cary Film # M540 roll 12 Phineas, who was also in the Civil war and died at Henderson, Kentucky Phineas Cary Steuben Republican 1 Mar 1862, P. 3 clm 1 We understand that Phineas Cary a Private in the 44th Indiana Regiment, formerly of Salem Township, who died at Henderson, was buried on last Wednesday in Salem. Phineas M Cary, of Co. G, enrolled Sep. 2, 1861 in Kendallville by D. Cary as a 2nd Sergeant; mustered in Nov. 22, 1861 in Ft. Wayne by Lt. Stansbury at age 21. He was 6' 0" tall, light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. Born Apr. 2, 1838, in Chenango Co., NY, employed as a carpenter, single, resident of Turkey Creek, in Steuben Co., IN. Died Feb. 22, 1862, of typhoid pneumonia after a lingering illness in Henderson, KY with rank of 2nd Sergeant. Notes: Son of John and Martha Cosper Cary; brother to David and Henry. Was one of the best members of the company, faithful, prompt, obedient and zealous in the discharge of his duties. Residence also listed as Kendallville, Noble Co., IN. His remains sent home in charge of D. Carey. Buried County Line Cemetery in Steuben Co., IN. His mother, Martha, filed Pension Application #284666 Jul. 18, 1881.
