Her husband Abner's obituary states that he married Phoebe Leek on September 26, 1891, but their marriage record does show that her parent's names were Warran and Lusena (Shepperd) Kirk. Read More	Phoebe's obituary states that she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Kirk. Her husband Abner's obituary states that he married Phoebe Leek on September 26, 1891, but their marriage record does show that her parent's names were Warran and Lusena (Shepperd) Kirk. I have noticed in some of the marriage records for Abner and Phoebe's children, her maiden name is shown as Leek. As yet, I have been unable to find a marriage record for Phoebe's parents; however, it appears that Phoebe's father died soon after her birth, her parents divorced, or perhaps they were never married. Phoebe Kirk, age 3, and her mother Louzena Shepherd, were living with her mother's parents, Joseph and Louisa Shepherd, in the 1880 Census of Henry County, Iowa, and Louzena was shown as widowed. Louzena married Abel Leek on July 6, 1882, in Burlington, Iowa. Her name is spelled Luzena Sheppard on that marriage record. Also, Phoebe's obituary states that she was born near Fremont, which could be either Mahaska or Wapello County. Her marriage record to Abner states that she was born in Henry County. Phoebe is named as the stepdaughter of Abel Leek in his obituary, and she is also named as the sister of James Leek in his obituary. -------------- Phoebe's Obituary from "Ottumwa Courier," April 21, 1967: Mrs. Phoebe A. Swope, 91, of 459 N. Fifth St. died at 7:50 a.m. today at St. Joseph Hospital, following a long illness. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Kirk, she was born near Fremont on March 24, 1876. A resident of Ottumwa most of her life, she was a member of First Pentecostal Assembly of God. She married Abner M. Swope on Sept. 26, 1891, in Wapello County. He preceded her in death in 1958. Surviving are two sons, John W. and Edward Swope, both of Ottumwa; two daughters, Rachel Van Kirk of North Hollywood, Calif., and Cora Bradley of Ottumwa; 11 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three sons, two sisters, and one brother. The body is at Johnson Funeral Chapel awaiting completion of arrangements. Fifth St., who died Friday at 7:50 a.m. at St. Joseph Hospital will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Walker, pastor of First Pentecostal Assembly of God Church, officiating. Burial will be in Round Point Cemetery, near Agency. Pallbearers will be Donald, Bernard, and George Bradley; Albert Yacko, Ellis Knox, and Marvin VanKirk.
