Description	:	Phoebe Cox Jackson was born in Ohio, probably Montgomery or Warren County, not too long after her parents had migrated from Newberry County, South Carolina. The family was Quaker and part of a large migration of Quakers from the Carolinas to Ohio. The family moved to Randolph County, Indiana about 1823. Phoebe met Joseph Jackson, her husband-to-be, at a funeral and "came home and told her sisters she had met the man she was going to marry." Read More	Phoebe Cox Jackson was born in Ohio, probably Montgomery or Warren County, not too long after her parents had migrated from Newberry County, South Carolina. The family was Quaker and part of a large migration of Quakers from the Carolinas to Ohio. The family moved to Randolph County, Indiana about 1823. Phoebe met Joseph Jackson, her husband-to-be, at a funeral and "came home and told her sisters she had met the man she was going to marry." Phoebe and Joseph were married in 1827 and she was not allowed to continue in the Quaker faith because she had "married out of unity." (Joseph had apparently been a Quaker also, and, some time before marrying Phoebe, had not been allowed to continue as a Quaker because he attended meetings of another denomination.) Phoebe and Joseph moved across Indiana, and then on to southeast Iowa in the early 1850's. Four of their sons and one son-in-law fought in the Civil War and all survived. Phoebe was widowed 41 years before she died, and for many of those years, she lived with one or another of her children and their families. She was known to go to bed "with the sun" and enjoyed sitting on a front porch and smoking a corn cob pipe. Family Information has shown her birth date as April 9, 1808. However, gravestone shows a a date in 1807. Thank you to Karen Bree for finding Phoebe's obituary (one of the pictures above) that also gives her birth date as April 9, 1807.
