After her graduation from Cairo High School, she completed... Read More	Phoebe Mae Baker March 4, 1914 - March 8, 2010 Phoebe Mae Baker, 96, passed away March 8, 2010, at the Clarence Care Center. Phoebe was born west of Duncans Bridge in Monroe County, Missouri, on March 4, 1914. She was the seventh and last child of Charlie and Della (Overfelt) Hill. After completion of her first 11 years of public education at Duncans Bridge, Phoebe moved to Cairo--payng for her room and board by performing light housekeeping duties while she also completed her senior year at Cairo High School. After her graduation from Cairo High School, she completed two terms at Kirksville State Teachers College (now Truman State University) and passed an examination which qualified her to teach school in any county in Missouri. While teaching at Maud, Phoebe met, dated, and ultimately married Paul Baker, a local farmer on January 1, 1937. Using money saved from her salary as a teacher, she helped Paul purchase 40 acres of land. She worked hard on the farm with Paul until his death in 1976---helping him milk, cooking for farm hands, planting/harvesting a large garden, canning/freezing the garden produce, raising/dressing chickens, baking bread, running errands to secure needed parts for farm machinery when necessary, as well as maintaining many of the business records for the G.C. Baker & Son farm partnership. Paul and his father George Baker raised corn, soybeans, wheat as well as beef cattle and feeder pigs. Despite her busy daily schedule, Phoebe found the time to raise two children--encouraging them to do well in school --very capably assisting them when necessary. She and Paul spent many hours chauffeuring their two children to 4-H club meetings, "Share the Fun" 4-H activities, cheerleading, baseball, and band. As a member of the Band Mothers Organization, Phoebe worked hard raising funds for band uniforms. She was also the principal care giver for her mother and father in the last years of their lives. Early in their married life Phoebe and Paul were members of the Maud Grange. During the 1950's and 1960's the Bakers attended Sunday School and church at the Maud Christian Church, a Disciples of Christ Church, where Phoebe often taught a Sunday School class. She was also an officer and member of the Maud Garden Club, Early in the 1970's Paul and Phoebe became members of the Clarence Christian Church. After her husband Paul's death in 1976, Phoebe focused on interests outside of her home; enjoying Study Club activities and socials; doting on her five grandchildren, traveling with friends to Hawaii, New England, Florida, and California. Throughout her life, Phoebe enjoyed being a hostess for neighbors, friends, family gatherings and reunions, for her siblings, including two sisters (Beryl Woods and Louise Meredith) who lived in the Maud community as well as Overfelt cousins. One niece described her Aunt Phoebe as "Fun, a bit daring, energetic, up-to-date, smart. This might imply that she was frivolous but she was not. She worked very hard and found time to help others. While busy with her own family she gave us attention and stayed interested in our lives. She was generous and encouraging." After living an active life in the Maud community for nearly 50 years, Phoebe moved to Clarence in the late 1990's to help care for her sister Louise. In 2006 Phoebe moved to her home at the Clarence Care Center where she thrived--enjoying the caring attention of the staff, good medical care as well as a wide variety of stimulating activities (Wii, bingo, spelling bees, etc). Her positive attitude, wit, sense of humor, and her easy-going conviviality made her a favorite among the staff at the Care Center and her family members. Phoebe's survivors include two children: Son, Paul LaRue Baker and his wife Virginia--of Clarence; Daughter, Ellen Joyce Long and her husband Everett --of Whitewater, Wisconsin; five grandchildren: Troy Baker (Bena); Trent Baker (Amy Woodruff); Paula Long (Josh Young); Laura Long (Jim Kelly); Doug Long (Wendy); 13 great grandchildren: Troy & Bena's children--Katie, Lacey, Nicholas and Molly; Trent and Amy's children: Isaac and Lauren; Paula and Josh's children: Phoebe and Eli; Laura and Jim's children: Meara and Audrey; and Doug and Wendy's children: Jarrod, Julia, and Amelia and one great great granddaughter Chloe. Funeral services will be held at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Clarence, MO, on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 10:00 am with burial to follow at the Maplewood Cemetery in Clarence. Visitation will be held at Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, March 12, 2010. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Clarence Care Center.
