Description	:	Phyllis E.McWhirter DIGHTON — Phyllis E. McWhirter, 80, died Thursday Aug. 17, 2006, at St. John's Rest Home in Victoria. She was born Sept. 22,1925, at Pendennis to William T. and Lola Thirlwell Smith. A lifetime resident of Lane County she went to school in Healy until she was 6 and her family moved to Dighton, where she continued her schooling, graduating in 1943. She attended Kansas University for three semesters, working between semesters at Phillip 66 in Dighton. On Dec. 1,1946, she married Don E. Mrs. McWhirter was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton, serving on many levels, and she considered the Funeral Dinner Committee as the most rewarding. She also served on the Dighton School Board and was a lifelong supporter of school activities, with a particular love of forensics, music and sports, and was a member of the Lane County Golf Association. A homemaker, she enjoyed supporting her children and grandchildren at sporting events. Her interests included golf, art, making pottery music, playing the harmonica and being a dedicated Dighton Hornet fan. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Campbell of Dighton; two sons, Kevin McWhirter of Rockford, 111., and William McWhirter of Dighton; two brothers, William T. Smith Jr. of Overland Park, and Maurice E. "Gene" Smith of Bonita Springs, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy J. Jones of Hilton Head, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Howard Bever officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church or Dighton Public School Foundation, both in care of the Boomhower Funeral Home, 145 N. Wichita, Dighton, KS 67839.
