Description	:	Phyllis Joyce Uhlenhopp, age 89, of, Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of George and Lettie (Schmertman) DeBuhr on June 21, 1929, in Kesley, Iowa. She lived there her entire unmarried life. She attended country school on the edge of Kesley until going to Aplington for high school. Read More	Phyllis Joyce Uhlenhopp, age 89, of, Aplington, Iowa, was born the daughter of George and Lettie (Schmertman) DeBuhr on June 21, 1929, in Kesley, Iowa. She lived there her entire unmarried life. She attended country school on the edge of Kesley until going to Aplington for high school. While in high school, Phyllis worked at the Kesley Mercantile where she served customers and rationed “rations.” She tells of having sugar and other foods behind the counter and giving small amounts to their regular customers. It was during these years that she met her future husband, Elvin Uhlenhopp, who lived only a mile away. On June 8, 1948, they were married at the Aplington Baptist Church. (This was one of the first church weddings.) To this union five children were born: Denton, Darwin, Darrow, Denise and Dalen. Phyllis was a faithful and active member of Aplington Baptist Church. She attended there her entire life serving as a nursery (preschool) Sunday School teacher for 50 years and choir director for 14. She faithfully attended church until she was no longer able to get out. When Phyllis married she moved a mile away from where she grew up. She became a housewife and mother and it was then that she perfected her skills in the kitchen. While juggling the activities of her kids, she cooked, canned (hundreds of quarts a year) and baked. Elvin and Phyllis had a huge garden. Nothing was wasted and freshly baked cake or cookies were always available until her illness made it too hard to do. Besides keeping up with her every day duties, Phyllis played the piano daily. She played by ear, so most often she would just sit down and play a few of her favorite hymns. However, her rendition of the “Boogie Woogie” could also be heard. Phyllis also found time to spend with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attended many of their sporting and music events and it was not unsual to see her on the floor playing dolls with the girls and tractors with the boys. Phyllis went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin on October 19, 2011; son, Darwin; daughter-in-law, Mary Uhlenhopp; sister, Faye VanGerpen; parents; and sisters and brothers-in-laws. Phyllis is survived by four of her five children, Denton (Deb) Uhlenhopp of Aplington, Darrow (Helene) Uhlenhopp of Nevada, Iowa, Denise (Bruce) Foth of Livermore, Iowa, and Dalen (Diane) Uhlenhopp of Madrid, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one sister, Leola (Gordon) Weiland of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, September 24, 2018, at the Aplington Baptist Church with burial in Peasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Aplington Baptist Church, Aplington, (319)346-1534, and one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family. Redman-Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington is in charge of arrangements.
