Description	:	Phyllis Pumphrey, 89, of Batavia, died July 6, 2011, at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield. She was born Dec. 13, 1921, to Milo Searie and Gladys Miller Mitchell. Milo died March 23, 1923. Gladys married George Curray on April 7, 1928. Gladys and George raised Phyllis, Jean, Pearl and Tom on their farm near the Hickory Ridge School north of Batavia. Phyllis graduated from Fairfield High School in 1939; she later graduated from Parsons College and Ottumwa Business School. Read More	Phyllis Pumphrey, 89, of Batavia, died July 6, 2011, at Jefferson County Hospital, Fairfield. She was born Dec. 13, 1921, to Milo Searie and Gladys Miller Mitchell. Milo died March 23, 1923. Gladys married George Curray on April 7, 1928. Gladys and George raised Phyllis, Jean, Pearl and Tom on their farm near the Hickory Ridge School north of Batavia. Phyllis graduated from Fairfield High School in 1939; she later graduated from Parsons College and Ottumwa Business School. On May 23, 1943, Phyllis and Richard Pumphrey were united in marriage at the Willard Street Methodist Church in Ottumwa. Richard died Feb. 16, 1992. She taught country school in Jefferson County and later worked for the Cardinal Commuinity School district, serving as substitute teacher and secretary. Phyllis retired in 1983 from the Union Bank & Trust. She belonged to the Retired Teachers Association and attended the Batavia Methodist Church. Her family especially remembers how important supporting the local school district was to their mother. Left to cherish her memory are three sons, Robert(Kathy)Pumphrey of Eldon, John(Janet)Pumphrey of Fargo, N.D., and James(Cindy)Pumphrey of Hastings, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Steve, Ronnie, Tara, Jonathan, Cassandra, Roslyn and Jaclyn; and six great-grandchildren. Phyllis is also survived by her siblings, Tom(Shirley)Curray of Ankeny and Pearl Neil of Batavia, and several nieces and nephews. Her sister Jean Haile of Packwood, passed away on July 29, 2011. In honoring Phyllis's wishes, her family will have a private family burial at the Batavia Cemetery. Your are invited to join us from 6-8 pm Saturday at the Batavia Community Center in remembering Phyllis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left in her honor to Hospice of Jefferson County, Batavia Fire Dept., Cardinal High School Band Dept. and the Batavia Methodis Church. Kremer Funeral Chapel of Batavia is assisting with arrangements.
