Gray, 34, married Desdamonia Taylor, age 20, in Patrick Co, VA on November 23, 1823. On September 30, 1850, Powell & Destemonia Gray, ages 61 & 47, lived on a farm in Southern District, Patrick Co, VA, valued at $3000. Their children were Norman R., age 13; Destemonia, 11; James W., 5; & Harriet N., 4. Elizabeth Taylor, Destemonia's mother, age 78, lived with them. ----- A biography of Powell's great-grandson, Ralph Gray, follows, in part: "Ralph Gray's great grandparents, Powell and Desdemonia Taylor Gray, arrived in Morgan county with their children in 1853. Powell was one of twelve brothers and sisters of Wm. and Mary Gray of Patrick County, Virginia. They were large land owners in Virgina and had at least 11 slaves. Some of Powell's brothers and possibly two sons had preceded them to Missouri and were living in Boone and surrounding counties. There were several of the Taylor family. Desdemonia's relatives also made the move to Missouri. The group stopped in Illinois for a while and again in St. Charles where John Martin died before leaving. Matilda, a widow, Powell and Desdie had 10 children, William, John Mary, Elizabeth, Matilda, Jane, Norman Powell, Desdemonia, James, and Harriet, and with the exception of one, all lived near them. Mary married George Staples; Jane married Peter Ivey; Harriet married Benjamin Campbell. Powell purchased 40 acres east of Versailles and built a log cabin, which still stands underneath a new house built around it and whee Ralph Gray now lives. This land has been in the Gray family for over 100 years. Powell lived out four years after moving to Missouri and upon his death, Desdie moved into Versailles and operated a boarding house. During the Civil War, Desdie, Norman P. and the youngest children went by wagon to Nebraska to escape being robbed or killed by the bushwhackers. they returned to Mo after the war and found the home place intact. Norman Powell, with his wife, Sarah Ann Ward, remained on the farm with his mother until her death in 1885 and the place passed to him. By this time Norman and Sally's family consisted of : Mary, Elizabeth, William Powell (Will), Nancy, Lillie, Jennie, and Desdemonia (who died as a child.) ... " Powell died in Versailles, Morgan Co, MO on Nov. 25, 1857.
