Stedman, one of the few surviving pioneer business men of Emmetsburg, passed away at his home in this city last Friday. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon and was very largely attended. Services were conducted at the Congregational church, the pastor, Rev. J. E. Brereton, officiating. The members of the Odd Fellows attended in a body and a large number of Woodmen were also present. Mr. Stedman was an early member of both organizations. The active pall bearers were E. R. Steenson, J. E. Schooley, F. W. Gilchrist, Wid Richardson, L. Stuehmer and D. L. Johnson. There were also six honorary pall bearers -- H. P. Johnson, Lewis Peterson, Robert Wilson, W. J. Brown, J. C. Bennett and J. E. Scott. The first named three represented the Woodmen and the last three the Odd Fellows. Pratt Hale Stedman was born at Adams, New York, October 3, 1851. His age was 72. He came west in 1865 and settled on a claim across the Minnesota line, a few miles north of Estherville. In 1872 he moved to Estherville. He worked for Ed Wells, who was in the harness business. Mr. Wells also owned the stage line from Estherville to Emmetsburg. Mr. Stedman became efficient as a harness maker and he drove stage on Mr. Wells' line during 1873 and 1874. October 31, 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah L. Grant of Estherville. Mr. and Mrs. Stedman moved to Emmetsburg in June, 1875. Mr. Stedman, with his brother, Warren B. Stedman, engaged in the harness business. In those days there was as great a demand of harness as there is now for autos. Often orders had to be taken and many were on the waiting list. Mr. Stedman at one time employed six men in his 18 x 20 foot room. They often worked nights. They would take an order late in the afternoon and make a delivery the following morning. At the time of his death, Mr. Stedman had served longer in continuous business than any other man in this city. Mr. Stedman is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter. The sons are Charles C. of this place and Sim R. of Mason City. The daughter is Mrs. Ina G. Williams of Solon, Iowa. A third son died in infancy. Mr. Stedman's brother moved to Kansas in pioneer days. Mr. Stedman was a capable, upright, obliging businessman and he had a large, loyal patronage. He gave his customers first class service and he was always at his post. He was very prompt in meeting his obligations. He was genial and he was outspoken and dependable. Though never pretentious in social, religious or business affairs, he always met every requirement that his means would permit. He was an organizer and charter member of the Emmetsburg fire department. Later he was elected chief and gave faithful service for many years. He became a member of the Odd Fellows in 1879 and he was also a charter member of the Woodsmen. In 1882 he united with the First Congregational church. He was always an encourager of better and more modern business methods and he stood for good school, a substantial city government and helpful community advantages. In his many associations he was anxious to serve as a worker rather than as an official. He was, on every occasion, a clean, temperate, courteous Christian gentleman. He was very much attached to his home. He was a devoted husband, an affectionate husband and a warm-hearted friend. Our business people, our pioneer residents and citizens in every walk of life sincerely mourn the death of Mr. Stedman and offer our sympathy to his wife and brother and the surviving sons and daughters in their sorrow.
