Funeral Services for Prominent Grassy Pond Citizen Will Be Held Tuesday at Grassy Pond. ~ Prayer W. Humphries, owner of approximitally 5,000 acres of the best farming lands in Cherokee and Cleveland counties, died yesterday at his home in the Grassy Pond community. he was 78 years old last June. ~ Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at the Grassy Pond Baptist church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with his six sons acting as pallbearers. P.S. Courtney, funeral director, will have charge. ~ A native of Cleveland county, Mr. Humphries had lived in the Grassy Pond community for more than half a century, having occupied for the past 30 years the residence where he died. While he never became affiliated with any church, he earned a reputation of being generous and charitable. Many of the tenants on his large estate had been with him for 20 to 30 years, it was stated. In connection with his farms Mr. Humphries operated cotton gins and saw mills. ~ Mr. Humphries had been in declining health for several months but last Thursday he contracted pneumonia, which proved fatal. In his already weakened condition he was unable to fight off the disease. ~ Surviving Mr. Humphries are his widow, who before marriage was Miss Melissa Wood, and the following children, all of Cherokee county: J. Thamer, V.A., J.P., W.O., B.W., and R.A. Humphries; Mrs. R.J. LeMaster, Mrs. N.T. Burgess and Mrs. Arthur Swofford.
