Description	:	Prentice M. Ramsey was born near Sprague, Washington on March 2nd, 1890 on the wheat ranch his father had homesteaded in 1888. He was the first of ten children born to John Price Ramsey and Mary A. (Morton) Ramsey. John had come into the territory from Missouri in 1882, met and married Mary Morton in 1888, and took out a homestead together that same year. Read More	Prentice M. Ramsey was born near Sprague, Washington on March 2nd, 1890 on the wheat ranch his father had homesteaded in 1888. He was the first of ten children born to John Price Ramsey and Mary A. (Morton) Ramsey. John had come into the territory from Missouri in 1882, met and married Mary Morton in 1888, and took out a homestead together that same year. In the following years, they moved around Whitman County about every five years as John took over wheatlands and developed and sold them with regularity. That accounts for their presence near Albion. Prentice learned to work the farms and graduated from Albion High School in 1905. He married Della Rideout in Sprague on 6 Oct 1915 and they moved to the newly irrigated lands of the Yakima Valley in 1919 after the birth of son James Prentice Ramsey. A second son was born in Byron, Yakima County, Wash., in 1920, Robert Wayne Ramsey. Prentice lost his small orchard at the beginning of the Great Depression and moved the family into a shack on 25 acres of irrigated land about a half-mile west. The boys graduated from high school in Mabton in 1936 and 1937. For Prentice and Della, the depression lasted 14 years. There was little money to spend but they never lacked for food. Jim joined the Navy and Bob wound up in the Army in World War II, Pacific Theater, and Tacoma Shipyards until the war was over. Then they worked the fruit harvests until Prentice suffered a heart attack. They took their nest egg from the shipyard pay and bought a small farm in 1948 where Prentice could raise a few chickens, fruit trees, berries, and vegetables to get by on in his limited condition. This 5-acre plot was near Longbranch on Key Peninsula in Pierce County. They continued to work the apple harvest near Brewster, Wash., each year until Prentice had another heart attack in 1956. This stopped their annual trip for apple harvest (Della was a packer and Prentice was an orchard foreman). Despite this, Prentice was active, if limited, for another five years when he died, as he started his car, on 30 Oct 1961, in his 72nd year. He was a timid man, often vexing my mother at his lack of confidence and search for work. He was not lazy however and put in long hours of farming, a work he thoroughly enjoyed. He could grow anything well but was a poor businessman. He often gave produce away he could have easily sold. He was friendly with everyone, no matter how ornery or scheming. He had exceptional intelligence and could well have been a college professor except for his confidence level. That, and opportunity of course. He was also one of those rare persons who continued to look young as they age. Mother lived a full and varied life, in the house I built for her until 1989 when she died at home at the age of 92.
